Car Lease: The Painful And Nightmarish Experience Of Getting It – The Insults And The Ripoffs And The Solution
Getting a car lease: why does it have to be so painful? And who is behind this huge business that lets it happen without any repercussions?
THEY CAN TALK TO YOU ANY WAY THEY WANT TO, THEY CAN RAISE YOUR VOICE, THEY CAN YELL AT YOU, THEY CAN HUMILIATE AND INSULT YOU, ALL IN THE NAME OF A CAR SALE OR CAR LEASE.
THE EXPERIENCE OF ENTERING A CAR DEALERSHIP TO LEASE OR BUY A CAR
This article of mine is slightly off-topic from the usual posts I publish.
I wanted to talk about the big elephant in the room regarding car dealers, your car lease, or when buying a car from a car dealership.
There are literally millions of complaints against car dealerships, people getting ripped off for a new or used car lease or a car sale, but no one seems to do anything about this, to change this and prevent it from happening again.
I run a business myself, and I never agreed to the saying: “the customer is always right” because not only it isn’t true but it reflects weakness and a sense of mercenarism that I just do not share.
However with car dealerships and the whole business of selling and leasing cars, things get real shady, and ripoffs abound.
I will describe the many personal and nightmarish experiences I had with car dealerships, in particular when trying to lease a car.
Over the course of 20 years, I visited several times car dealerships. Some of these happen to be among my favorite car brands and the quality is satisfactory. I always shoot for 5-star safety ratings, comfort, and a bit of speed and a unique (not so common) style. Their pricing does not seem to be outrageous either. So what’s wrong with trying to get a car lease or even buying a new or used car?
THE SALES PEOPLE AND THE CAR DEALERSHIP MANAGERS WILL EAT YOU ALIVE
They all act nice when you set foot in, a smile here and a smile there, coffee sir? Coffee Mam? How are you today? As soon as the negotiation process starts, the attitude changes, the smiles go away and the insults start, and most of these at a very subtle level.
You go for a test drive, all seems well. Then you go back, and you sit down by their desk. Here starts the real nightmare:
They will ask you to fill out an application to run your credit!
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THAT!!!
They do not have to run your credit first. You can negotiate a price, agree upon it, and then, you can see if the bank approves you based on your credit score and history.
THEY WILL ASK YOU FOR A CAR LEASE DEPOSIT
I have done business for many years, and no matter the field, THERE IS NO DEPOSIT UNLESS YOU HAVE AN AGREEMENT OR A QUOTE FIRST. It is just logic and common sense.
They will ask you for a $500 deposit and they will attempt to shame you by saying that you are not serious about the deal and that you are wasting their time. They usually take it down to $250 or $100 if they see resistance on your part. They will say it is refundable. What they won’t tell you is that they will make the refund process very hard down the road.
They will say you have to come in with the credit/debit card in order for them to issue you a refund but that isn’t true. I tell them: I build online shops and checkouts and I know how merchant processors work, and you do not have to have my card in your hands to issue me a refund. In fact, you can give them your card number over the phone and they will reimburse you that way (usually they just void the authorization which only authorized the payment and did not capture it).
They are always inviting you to go back because once you are on their floor, you will be their victim, they will do anything to psychologically beat you down and get you to pay their price. Their pricing is always bloated.
I want to specify though that I got nothing against bloating a price if it is not insanely bloated, after all, we live in a free economy and we can all price our services and products any way we wish. However, the negotiation process does not have to escalate to insults, humiliation, and all kinds of attempts to run you down.
You can use sales techniques without crossing any boundaries and you can remain polite, calm, and respectful while negotiating. This is far from most car dealers doctrine.
I IRRITATE THEM AND THEY GET AGGRESSIVE
When they see that you are not ignorant in the matter and you are not easy to fold and fool, and you are not going to listen to their blah, blah, blah and over-the-roof prices, then, THEY GET AGGRESSIVE.
THE FIRMER YOU ARE, THE MORE AGGRESSIVE THEY GET
I do not think anyone in their right mind and that knows about business, will get a sale by intimidating and insulting a customer. This type of attitude only enrages a client, and anyone with a bit of pride will walk away from any deal, simply out of dignity.
Most auto companies, they all have done this to me and to millions of people. You can read the complaints that any car dealership has, the stories are just horrific and very detailed. Of course, there is always a fake review here and there, but when negative reviews abound, something must be really wrong.
WHO’S BEHIND AND WHO’S ALLOWING THIS?
I walked into a car dealership at 9 am, and actually caught them during an open-door meeting: “YOU GOT TO MAKE MONEY!!! YOU GOT TO BURY THEM!!! YOU GOT TO SELL!!!”
The manager was screaming the words above at the top of his lungs. He sounded like a guerilla leader and they were all ready to go into a battlefield. He was pumping them and bolstering their adrenaline and aggression.
In that very moment, the salesman that I had an appointment with, saw me and greeted me, and I said: Quite a motivational speech. At the same time, the guerrilla-leader-manager lowered his voice and immediately killed the open-door/mistakenly-public meeting: “Shoo, Shoo, go away”, he says to his staff like if they are annoying insects.
These are the people that you are going to encounter when entering a car dealership and when trying to lease or buy a car (a high percentage of them, very high).
They make it a goal to melt you psychologically until you surrender and buy or lease their cars at their price.
So, who’s behind this? Who’s allowing an employee to talk down at you, yell at you, attempt to humiliate and insult you?
Is it the mafia?
Is it just a big business? Lots of power and ties with politicians?
I NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE IN THE CAR BUSINESS GETTING INTO TROUBLE
It is like consequences do not exist to them. Complain? To who? On Google? They do not seem to care and it does not seem to stop people from going over a particular car dealership (there aren’t that many brands and most of us need a car).
Complain to the BBB? Like they do anything. It seems they lost a lot of leverage lately but it does not hurt to try.
As stated on their site, BBB does not verify the accuracy of information provided by others, and does not guarantee the accuracy of information in the business profiles.
You can complain to the State Attorney General, from what I researched, car dealers take these complaints seriously; DMV regulated auto business, or to https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/getting-started but I believe that they have so many complaints piled up that they will only take care of the most urgent ones. Unless you lost serious money on a deal, I don’t think anyone will help you if the sale person got aggressive and told you to go f…yourself. On the other hand, you can tell them to do the same 😀.
They are very skillful at making anyone lose their temper. They provoke you into losing yourself. Here is the secret: always remain calm even when arguing and do not let them speak over you; continue speaking or simply look elsewhere.
I feel like this car business is so much unresolved, and it seems only a few take action to stop this madness.
It feels utopic to imagine in the future that we would step into a car dealership: negotiate; shake hands; close or terminate the deal like professionals and civilized human beings.
We do not have an agreement, thank you. Or: deal! Simple without overly aggressive sale strategies, disrespect, and greed getting in the way.
WHAT TO DO THEN AND HOW TO ACCOMPLISH A CAR LEASE > ?
HOW DO YOU ACCOMPLISH A CAR LEASE WITHOUT LIVING THE NIGHTMARE OF ENTERING A CAR DEALERSHIP?
After so many years of doing that, over and over again, I acquired some skills and managed to get good car lease deals. However, for most of you out there, I have a solution.
With my solution, you will not need to go through all of the above, no more experiencing the insults, having to negotiate aggressively, but most of all, having to defend yourself from this abusive attitude from the car lease and sale industry (not all of them are like that though but a good 90%) 🤦♂️.
